LAHORE / SIALKOT (Flood Relief Update – Aug 28, 2025):
The Punjab government has officially requested military deployment in six districts — Lahore, Kasur, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Narowal, and Okara — as floodwaters continue to rise from India’s upstream dam releases and relentless monsoon rains.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a “very high to exceptionally high” flood risk warning for the next 48 hours, urging citizens to evacuate low-lying areas.
“The flood situation is grave. The next 48 hours will be critical,” said PDMA official Irfan Ali Kathia.
Current Situation on the Ground
- Ravi & Chenab Rivers: Inflows at Head Marala barrage crossed 900,000 cusecs, nearing 2014 flood levels.
- Sialkot: Schools closed, airport partially shut after 405mm of rain; Section 144 imposed to restrict public movement.
- Narowal: Local administration requested army assistance as Dek Nullah and Ravi overflow submerge villages.
- Qadirabad Headworks (Mandi Bahauddin): Receiving near one million cusecs, threatening Hafizabad & Chiniot.
- Lahore: Facing flood alerts due to India’s Thein Dam & Madhopur Dam releases into Ravi.
The Punjab Home Department confirmed that the military will support evacuations, embankment reinforcement, and logistics. If needed, army aviation units will be deployed.
